Numerical Simulation of Brittle Crack and Growth for Interface Edge of Bonded Materials

Abstract: The effect of behavior of a dissimilar material bonded at the lower edge of a simple-supported beam and its bonded angle on the stress distribution near the interface edge is studied by FEM. The results show that the bonded angle and the behavior of the bonded material only affect the stress values, but have little effect on the stress distribution.According to the stress distributions of the interface edge, the maximum shear stress criterion is proposed. Then the crack and propagation for the interface edge are simulated numerically based on the maximum shear stress criterion and the maximum circumferential tensile stress criterion. The results show that the crack and propagation shall develop along the interface under the maximum shear stress, or develop in the direction perpendicular to the interface into the beam under the maximum circumferential tensile stress. It is helpful to reveal the rule of the crack and propagation for the interface edge, and the results are helpful to engineering repair…
